MVT CDL DRIVER
To get a Commercial Drivers License, begin by contacting the state department of motor vehicles nearest you and follow these 12 steps:
- Check your state’s eligibility requirements: Each state has its requirements (Age, Residency, and Medical) for licensed commercial drivers. Some states require you to have been a resident of the state for several months before you apply for a CDL. You must be at least 21 if you want to work a transportation or trucking company that is involved in interstate commerce.
- Pick the type of vehicle you want to drive. - Get a copy of your state’s CDL manual. You can get a copy of your State’s CDL manual at your local DMV office, or you can download the manual on their website. You need to consider that to apply for a CDL; you will have to take a written exam.
- Fill out your CDL Application. There is a specific form for a state that you need to complete to apply for a CDL. You can either download the online form and finish it ahead of time, but in some cases, the States require you to fill out the form in person. Part of this application will be a 10-year history record check.
- Bring all required documents. To apply for a CDL, you must bring your Identification, proof of citizenship status, and proof of residency. Depending on the type of license you need you may need to present more background documentation or medical records. All states charge fees for issuing a CDL. You may pay the application, written test, and permit fee all at once, then pay the skills test and license fee later.
- Turn in your application along with all required documents in person at your local DMV office. You must bring documents that prove your identity and your residency.
- Pass the written test. You need to demonstrate knowledge of the rules of the road. All CDL applicants must take a general written test before they can get a CDL permit. - Restrictions on CDL permits may vary, but generally, you need a supervising driver who has the same CDL class and type you want to get. Some states require your supervising driver to fill out a form clearing you to take the skills test.
- Be sure to complete all required training. In some states, you will have to complete training or certification approved by the state before you will be eligible to take the CDL skills test.
- Schedule and take your CDL Skill Test: Some states will require you to drive on your permit for at least two weeks before you can schedule a skill test, you should feel comfortable behind the wheel and enough practice time. You will take an exam base on the type of vehicle you will be driving.
- After you pass the skill test, your examiner will issue your CDL, once you get your CDL, be sure to check over it carefully to make sure all the information on its correct.
